Understanding Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
|
“ADHD can be frustrating for both teachers and students, but coming together to find strategies that work helps your student — and your relationship — blossom.”
Edutopia, November 19, 2021
The ‘Understanding Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder’ course looks at the impact ADHD can have on a student’s life and shows how you can make your classroom and practice more inclusive for students with ADHD. This course, licensed from Online Training International (OLT), will support you to further understand the needs of students with ADHD and develop a range of strategies to improve learning outcomes.
Through this blending learning course of approximately 8 weeks, participants complete four online course modules in their own time and attend online tutor support sessions that are scheduled after school hours to:
- Learn about ADHD, including its distinguishing characteristics, its prevalence, and other behaviours that may arise from ADHD.
- Explore the possible causes of ADHD.
- Learn how to assess individual needs arising from ADHD, assess environmental triggers and create your own three SMART goals specific to your student/s.
- Explore a range of interventions/adjustments to meet the needs of students with ADHD, including managing difficult behaviour, transitions and social skills.
- Plan interventions to meet the SMART goals specific to your student/s.
* To reflect on the course content, participants write short contributions to several forum topics as they progress through the course.
* To apply learning from the course, participants develop three short term support plans for a student or students they work with. This includes writing SMART goals and identifying interventions to support achievement of the goals.
* On completion of the course, a certificate of online completion is provided for professional learning records (recognising 20 hours of learning aligned to the AITSL standards for teachers).
While the course was primarily developed for teachers, school leaders and allied health officers, education support staff (aides) may also enrol in the course. Where components of the course focus on student assessment, goal setting and program planning, it is recommended that aides speak to their teacher colleagues or the course tutor if they have any questions / need assistance with these aspects of the course.
A short course for parents of children with ADHD is also available for those who are looking for more support and information.
The course has made me more reflective and knowledgeable about meeting an individual students needs. I believe I have a greater understanding of tools and resources and I will continue to access these and become confident in applying strategies. Primary School Teacher |
It has given me a much greater insight into other factors besides hyperactivity that present in students with ADHD. It has given me confidence to present at our staff meeting and develop goals and interventions to assist students. Secondary School Wellbeing Officer |
This course has opened my eyes to ADHD and the difficulties students can have in the school environment. It has given me many ideas for new strategies to try out with my students. Education Support Officer |
I really liked the way that we had to set goals and plan interventions. This enabled me to properly reflect on the goals which I have previously created for my students and the interventions which can assist in achieving them. Primary School Teacher |
