Trauma Sensitive Practice - North West Victoria Region
This DET NWVR eduGate page has an array of resources, professional learning, policies, templates and programs that will assist in building a theoretical understanding of trauma sensitive practice, develop a shared understanding and literacy, and assist workforces to support vulnerable learners and families. The Australian Child and Adolescent Trauma, Loss and Grief Network website
(ACATLGN) is a network that works with a team of experts to bring together evidence based resources and research in order to make them more accessible to those working with children and young people who have been affected by trauma and grief. Their website includes comprehensive resources, webinars and a free e-learning course on trauma informed care.

National Child Traumatic Stress Network Learning Centre
Launched in May 2017, the Core Curriculum on Childhood Trauma (CCCT) Online Modules are a resource created by the NCTSN for all individuals who work with children and families exposed to trauma events. These modules help learners develop a trauma lens through which they can view and better comprehend the effects of traumatic experiences and losses.

Partnering Agreement
Schools, Child Protection Practitioners and case workers are required to meet their obligations under the Out-Of-Home Care Education Commitment: A Partnering Agreement between: the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), the Department of Education and Training (DET), Catholic Education Commission of Victoria and Independent Schools Victoria.

Supporting student wellbeing, positive behaviour and mental health
Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships Learning Materials
The Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships learning materials have been designed for teachers in primary and secondary schools to develop students’ social, emotional and positive relationship skills. The materials cover eight topics of Social and Emotional Learning across all levels of primary and secondary education: Emotional Literacy; Personal Strengths; Positive Coping; Problem Solving; Stress Management; Help Seeking; Gender and Identity; and Positive Gender Relationships.
The Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships learning materials have been designed for teachers in primary and secondary schools to develop students’ social, emotional and positive relationship skills. Efforts to promote social and emotional skills and positive gender norms in children and young people has been shown to improve health related outcomes and subjective wellbeing. It also reduces antisocial behaviours including engagement in gender-related violence.

School-wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) is an evidence-based framework for preventing and responding to student behaviour. It aims to create a positive school climate, a culture of student competence and an open, responsive management system for all school community members.

SAFE Minds
The Victorian Government has partnered with headspace, the National Youth Mental Health Foundation to develop SAFEMinds: Schools And Families Enhancing Minds, a comprehensive learning and resource package that will enhance the capacity of school communities to effectively identify children and young people with early signs of mental health issues, offer school-based interventions and refer appropriately when needed.

Kids Helpline @ School
Kids Helpline @ School is an early intervention and prevention model for all primary school aged students around Australia. The program allows primary schools to invite Kids Helpline counsellors into their classroom via video link or phone. Each session is facilitated by a tertiary qualified Kids Helpline counsellor who then works with the teacher/school counsellor to tailor each session to the needs of the school and particular class. Sessions aim to improve mental health literacy in primary school aged children, promote resilience and encourage help seeking behaviours.

The Promoting and Supporting Mental Health program aims to support staff in schools to recognise and understand their role in promoting mental health and to build their capacity and skills to create environments where children and young people can thrive, learn and grow.

Spelfabet
This website designed by Speech Pathologist Alison Clarke provides information and resources for teaching the foundations of literacy. It aims to provide accessible and evidence based information about teaching literacy and children who have difficulty learning to read and write. It encourages the use of systematic synthetic phonics for teaching literacy skills in the first three years of school and provides evidence based resources.
Oral Language Supporting Early Literacy
This website outlines a research project undertaken in a number of schools under the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria. The project aimed to improve the oral language skills of students in the early years of schooling, and in doing so improve their literacy skills. The website provides extensive resources for teachers and parents to support oral language and literacy skills. Kids First Therapeutic Services
In recognition of the devastating effects of sexual abuse trauma, CPS Therapeutic Services provides a specialist therapeutic program for children, young people and their families/carers. Kids First Therapeutic Services works with: Children and young people under 18 years of age who have been sexually abused; Children under the age of 10 who have displayed problematic sexualised behaviours; Young people between 10 and 17 who have engaged in sexually abusive behaviours.
Gatehouse Centre
Gatehouse Centre is a department of the Royal Children’s Hospital. It is a Centre Against Sexual Assault (CASA) that provides assessment, treatment and advocacy services for children, young people (aged between 0-17) and their families, living in the North Western metropolitan area of Melbourne or the cities of Moreland and Hume, where sexual abuse is known or suspected to have happened and children, young people (aged between 0-15) and their families, living in the North Western metropolitan area of Melbourne or the cities of Moreland and Hume, where problem sexual or sexually abusive behaviours are a concern.
Supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
Marrung Aboriginal Education Plan 2016-2026
This plan demonstrates the Victorian Government’s strong commitment to improving performance and success of Koorie learners and closing the gap in Koorie education outcomes where these exist. Marrung will leverage the Education State reform agenda across early childhood, schools and vocational education and training. It will build culturally responsive and inclusive services and provide for targeted Koorie initiatives, including initiatives to support learners with additional needs to meet educational benchmarks.
Koorie Heritage Trust Building Aboriginal Cultural Competency Program
The Koorie Heritage Trust provide Aboriginal Cultural Competency/Indigenous Cultural Awareness Training programs and can tailor a program that suits particular requirements. The Building Aboriginal Cultural Competency program also includes a Strategic Partnerships Program designed specifically for School Leadership to develop their cultural competency in order to implement the Victorian Aboriginal Affairs Framework 2013-2018 and the DET Garrin Garrin Policy into schools.

DET Koorie Education Coordinator
KECs can assist Koorie students and schools with guidance and assistance on a range of programs and initiatives. You can contact your regional KEC through your DET Regional Office for further information and advice. Kids Matter Aboriginal Animations
KidsMatter, in partnership with highly regarded Aboriginal consultants, have developed a series of animations that are designed to support the social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal children and provide viewers with an understanding of what social and emotional wellbeing means to Aboriginal people. ABLES Online Professional Learning Program
The DET ABLES professional learning course is a free online course suitable for teachers and educational support staff. The course comprises five modules, each focusing on a specific element of the ABLES suite of resources and each requiring approximately one hour of online participation to complete.

Online Training for Special Education Needs
Online training courses which support teachers and educational personnel in Victorian government schools in responding to the diverse additional needs of students. The online courses are delivered through a supported training model over 8-10 weeks. This model includes tutor-led sessions for discussions, presentations and sharing of resources as well as self-paced individual study.
Courses are available on Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder, Inclusion of students with Speech, Language and Communication Needs, Understanding Dyslexia and significant difficulties with reading, and Understanding Hearing Loss.
DET Restraint and Seclusion Guidelines

Addressing bullying, racism and gender inequality
Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships
Respectful Relationships is about tackling family violence through education. As part of a staged process, all Victorian schools will be supported to implement a whole school approach. This will include looking at schools’ practices and policies relating to gender and driving meaningful cultural change. The approach will build a culture of respect and equality in our schools - as learning places and as workplaces that achieve long-term change in the community.

Child FIRST
A referral to Child FIRST is the best way of connecting children, young people and their families to the services they need. School staff should make a referral to Child FIRST where school staff have concerns about a child’s wellbeing but do not believe the child is in need of protection.
Victorian System of Care Referral Matrix
The Victorian System of Care Referral Matrix is a tool which supports parents and carers, school staff and other professionals to appropriately refer children and young people to mental health services. It enables the user to input information about the issues an individual child or young person may be presenting with in order to access local information and contact details for appropriate mental health services.
Royal Children’s Hospital Psychology Service
The Psychology Service offers specific clinical psychology and neuropsychology services to referrers in the hospital and in the community. Services include developmental, behavioural, emotional and psychosocial assessment to provide an understanding of presenting problems and their origins, diagnostic and cognitive assessments, short term interventions and secondary and tertiary consultations.
Raising Children Network
Funded under the Australian Government’s Stronger Families and Communities Strategy, the Raising Children Network is a national website aimed at helping families care for their children. It provides expert information and articles on a range of issues relevant to children’s development.
Better Health Channel
The Better Health Channel provides health and medical information online. It is a Victorian state government initiative that provides reliable and easy to understand information.
CAMHS and Schools Early Action Program
The Austin CASEA program has been designed to assist schools and families to support primary school-aged children with their social, emotional and behavioural development. It aims to enhance skills in understanding and expressing feelings, as well as getting along with others. The Austin CASEA program is delivered in the primary school setting for 8 students and parents.
Family Mental Health Support Service
FMHSS provides early intervention support to assist vulnerable families with children and young people who are at risk of, or affected by, mental illness. These services support parents to reduce stress and enable young people to reach their potential.
Kids First
Kids First (formerly Children’s Protection Society) provide a range of services to children, young people and families, and deal with complex issues of sexual abuse and neglect of children, family violence, homelessness, poverty, mental health, drug and alcohol issues and the trauma that these have on the lives of children and families.

CAMHS strives to provide multidisciplinary support in a collaborative manner delivering mental health services to children and young people with their needs, wellbeing, and safety recognised and protected.
The Bouverie Centre
The Bouverie Centre work with families affected by alcohol and other drugs, gambling, mental health and trauma to help them strengthen relationships and resolve problems standing in the way of their well-being. Services include family therapy and Taekwondo classes for clients under 18 years of age.

Headspace
Headspace is the National Youth Mental Health Foundation providing early intervention mental health services to 12-25 year olds. Information and services for young people, their families and friends as well as health professionals can be accessed through the website, headspace centres and the online counselling service e-headspace.

Ask Izzy
Ask Izzy helps people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless to find the services they need, right now and nearby. It is Australia wide, free and anonymous and can help with finding housing, meals, health services, counselling, legal help, addiction help and many more services.
State Schools Relief Fund
If you have a family who is struggling to meet the costs of school uniforms, shoes, books and stationery for their children, you may be able to receive these for free or at a discount through State Schools’ Relief. Applications must be made by the school.

The Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships learning materials have been designed for teachers in primary and secondary schools to develop students’ social, emotional and positive relationship skills. Kids Helpline @ School
Kids Helpline @ School is an early intervention and prevention model for all primary school aged students around Australia. The program allows primary schools to invite Kids Helpline counsellors into their classroom via video link or phone. Each session is facilitated by a tertiary qualified Kids Helpline counsellor who then works with the teacher/school counsellor to tailor each session to the needs of the school and particular class. Sessions aim to improve mental health literacy in primary school aged children, promote resilience and encourage help seeking behaviours.

Gatehouse Centre
Gatehouse Centre is a department of the Royal Children’s Hospital. It is a Centre Against Sexual Assault (CASA) that provides assessment, treatment and advocacy services for children, young people (aged between 0-17) and their families, living in the North Western metropolitan area of Melbourne or the cities of Moreland and Hume, where sexual abuse is known or suspected to have happened and children, young people (aged between 0-15) and their families, living in the North Western metropolitan area of Melbourne or the cities of Moreland and Hume, where problem sexual or sexually abusive behaviours are a concern.

Marrung Aboriginal Education Plan 2016-2026
This plan demonstrates the Victorian Government’s strong commitment to improving performance and success of Koorie learners and closing the gap in Koorie education outcomes where these exist. Online Training for Special Education Needs
Online training courses which support teachers and educational personnel in Victorian government schools in responding to the diverse additional needs of students. The online courses are delivered through a supported training model over 8-10 weeks. This model includes tutor-led sessions for discussions, presentations and sharing of resources as well as self-paced individual study.
Courses are available on Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder, Inclusion of students with Speech, Language and Communication Needs, Understanding Dyslexia and significant difficulties with reading, and Understanding Hearing Loss.

Child FIRST
A referral to Child FIRST is the best way of connecting children, young people and their families to the services they need. School staff should make a referral to Child FIRST where school staff have concerns about a child’s wellbeing but do not believe the child is in need of protection.
Victorian System of Care Referral Matrix
The Victorian System of Care Referral Matrix is a tool which supports parents and carers, school staff and other professionals to appropriately refer children and young people to mental health services. It enables the user to input information about the issues an individual child or young person may be presenting with in order to access local information and contact details for appropriate mental health services.
Royal Children’s Hospital Psychology Service
The Psychology Service offers specific clinical psychology and neuropsychology services to referrers in the hospital and in the community. Services include developmental, behavioural, emotional and psychosocial assessment to provide an understanding of presenting problems and their origins, diagnostic and cognitive assessments, short term interventions and secondary and tertiary consultations.
Raising Children Network
Funded under the Australian Government’s Stronger Families and Communities Strategy, the Raising Children Network is a national website aimed at helping families care for their children. It provides expert information and articles on a range of issues relevant to children’s development.
Better Health Channel
The Better Health Channel provides health and medical information online. It is a Victorian state government initiative that provides reliable and easy to understand information.
CAMHS and Schools Early Action Program
The Austin CASEA program has been designed to assist schools and families to support primary school-aged children with their social, emotional and behavioural development. It aims to enhance skills in understanding and expressing feelings, as well as getting along with others. The Austin CASEA program is delivered in the primary school setting for 8 students and parents.
Family Mental Health Support Service
FMHSS provides early intervention support to assist vulnerable families with children and young people who are at risk of, or affected by, mental illness. These services support parents to reduce stress and enable young people to reach their potential.
Kids First
Kids First (formerly Children’s Protection Society) provide a range of services to children, young people and families, and deal with complex issues of sexual abuse and neglect of children, family violence, homelessness, poverty, mental health, drug and alcohol issues and the trauma that these have on the lives of children and families.
Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service
CAMHS strives to provide multidisciplinary support in a collaborative manner delivering mental health services to children and young people with their needs, wellbeing, and safety recognised and protected.
The Bouverie Centre

Headspace
Headspace is the National Youth Mental Health Foundation providing early intervention mental health services to 12-25 year olds. Information and services for young people, their families and friends as well as health professionals can be accessed through the website, headspace centres and the online counselling service e-headspace.

Ask Izzy
Ask Izzy helps people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless to find the services they need, right now and nearby. It is Australia wide, free and anonymous and can help with finding housing, meals, health services, counselling, legal help, addiction help and many more services.
State Schools Relief Fund
If you have a family who is struggling to meet the costs of school uniforms, shoes, books and stationery for their children, you may be able to receive these for free or at a discount through State Schools’ Relief. Applications must be made by the school.
