Attachment and Trauma Theory

Course Structure:
This course introduces participants to the knowledge and skills required to facilitate teaching and learning for students with behavioural and learning difficulties often associated with disrupted attachment and trauma.

- work through 4 modules of online course content, (licensed from and hosted by Online Training International / OLT), over a period of approximately 8 weeks, and
- attend 3 mandatory online sessions (75 – 90 minutes each) with the course tutor via the WebEx platform.
Course content:
This course draws on the work and attachment-informed practice of Yarra Me School in Melbourne and builds on the model of attachment training and research carried out by Bath Spa University, U.K.
Successful completion of the course requires that participants:
A certificate recognising 20 hours of professional learning is provided on passing the course.
- Understanding
- Learn about the impact of traumatic experiences on the brain.
- Learn about the origins of attachment theory.
- Explore the four styles of attachment and their characteristics.
- Assessment for Learning
- Learn the definitions of the different types of attachment disorder.
- Explore related and co-occurring difficulties, and the impact on learning in the classroom.
- Interventions
- Explore a range of adjustments for working with each type of attachment style and the process of personalising learning.
- Reflect on your reactions to challenging behaviour and ways to respond to challenging incidents.
- Understand the importance of a whole school approach to supporting students with different attachment styles, and attachment disorders.
- Case Studies
- View real video examples that illustrate the needs of the individual, the interventions implemented and their resulting progress.
Successful completion of the course requires that participants:
- read all online content, complete end of section quizzes,
- contribute to online forum topics,
- develop three SMART goals with accompanying interventions to apply learning into practice in the classroom, and
- participate in three face-to-face sessions (WebEx meetings).

Course Audience:
The course is designed for teachers, visiting teachers and allied health officers who are responsible for assessing and supporting students with disabilities and learning difficulties.
As components of the course focus on student assessment, goal setting and program planning, interested Education Support staff (aides) should discuss this with a teacher from their school as it is best practice for teachers and ES to collaborate on these parts of the course.

N.B. A sliding discount is available to schools registering more than 3 participants.
